What Your Player Learns

Pick a program to see what a session looks like and what each week builds.

Inside the Shooting Program:

A typical session

Every session is 60 minutes and built on proper shooting form. Most of our shooting work happens in the mid-range, an underused part of the game.

  1. About 5 min
    Warm-up and stretch

Players get loose and ready to move, so the rest of the hour goes to learning.

  2. About 8 to 10 min
    Ball-handling

Players learn to control the ball with one ball and two, standing still and on the move, so they can get to their spot off the bounce.

  3. About 5 to 8 min
    Partner shooting

With no rim, players learn to spot what's right and wrong in a shot by calling out feet, elbow, and wrist for a partner. That makes them better at checking their own.

  4. About 10 min
    Form shooting at the rim

From about 5 feet, slow and deliberate, players repeat good form one detail at a time. It's partner shooting with a rim, and it builds the habit of the right shot.

  5. About 30 min
    The day's skill work

Players take their form into mid-range shots, off the catch and off the dribble. Depending on the week, they also work on footwork, layups (the right foot and hand, and finishing through contact), shot fakes, and free throws.

  6. About 5 to 8 min
    A timed shooting competition

Players practice shooting with a little pressure as a team, and the clock gives them something to beat from one session to the next.

The four weeks

Shooting form comes first every week. Skills and game-like situations are built on top.

  1. Week 1
Shooting form and a first look at footwork

Players learn each step of the shot and how to set their feet, so they leave with a shot they can check for themselves.

  2. Week 2
More footwork, ball movement, and layups

Players learn to protect the ball and move it past a defender (we call it ripping through), and to finish layups with the correct foot and hand.

  3. Week 3
Putting it together, plus shot fakes and free throws

Players use footwork, ball movement, and layups together, and add a shot fake and a free throw routine they can repeat.

  4. Week 4
All of it together, plus the reverse layup

Players practice everything together in more game-like situations, then add the reverse layup.

Every shooting program is 9 sessions: eight over four weeks, plus a bonus Saturday session. Every session is 60 minutes.

With your permission, we film each player's shot at the start and the end, and we send you both videos so you can see what changed.

Inside the Skills Program:

A typical session

Every session is 60 minutes. The order can change from day to day.

  1. About 5 min
    Warm-up and stretch

Players get loose and ready to move.

  2. About 5 to 8 min
    Ball-handling

Players learn to control the ball with their finger pads and keep their eyes up, so they can see the floor.

  3. About 5 to 8 min
    Passing

Players learn the chest pass and the bounce pass, with hands on the sides of the ball and a follow-through, so the ball gets to a teammate cleanly.

  4. About 5 to 8 min
    Defense

Players learn to stay in front of the ball handler by moving their feet, not by reaching.

  5. About 5 to 8 min
    Rebounding

Players learn to jump and grab the ball, and the basics of boxing out to get into position.

  6. About 10 to 15 min
    Shooting

Players learn the steps of a good shot and practice them with partners and at the rim.

The 4 Weeks

Players learn the basics of every skill. Each week builds on the one before, and new work comes after a stationary set of drills.

  1. Week 1
    The basics of everything

Players meet every skill at its simplest. They dribble one ball while mostly standing still, learn the chest and bounce pass, slide their feet on defense (a player favorite is Guts Defense), jump to grab the ball from up high

  2. Week 3
    Game-like passing and timing

Players learn to pass the way it happens in a game: leading a teammate and getting the ball to them when they're open. They time a jump to catch a tossed ball at the top, and on defense they add 1v1 Rollout, where they hustle for the ball and, if they don't get it, learn to stay in front while the other player attacks in a straight line. Shooting adds more dribbling into shots and catching and shooting.

  3. Week 4
    Putting it together

Players use what they've learned in more game-like drills, and shooting is review and reinforce.

The Skills Program is four Saturday sessions, one for each week.

Why we built it

We keep seeing talented kids who can’t shoot: two hands, a flared elbow, a flat shot. We see gaps in dribbling, passing, and defense, too.

Quality instruction in the fundamentals is hard to find around here, so we built it.

Groups stay small, so a player who needs our attention gets it.

In our experience, strong fundamentals, and a better shot most of all, make kids love the game and want to work on everything else.

What's You'll See in Our Clinics

Pick a clinic to see what the hour covers.

What happens in a Shooting Clinic hour

  1. Ball-handling

Players warm up with the ball, and you see how we teach control from the first drill.

  2. Secrets of the Shot

Players see the whole shot from feet to follow-through and why each step matters, so you learn what we mean by proper form.

  3. Partner shooting

Players shoot to each other with no rim and call out what they see, and you see how we teach them to notice what's right and what's off.

  4. Form shooting at the rim

Close in, with a drill or two focused on proper form, so players feel what a good shot is like.

  5. A first look at footwork

Players try planting the inside foot, which helps them catch a pass and be ready to shoot.

  6. Layups

The basics, one step at a time, including which foot to jump from.

What happens in a Skills Clinic hour

One hour with a couple of drills for each skill.

  1. Dribbling

Players learn to control the ball with their finger pads and keep their eyes up.

  3. Proper shooting form

Players learn the steps of a good shot, one at a time.

  4. Rebounding

Good to Know

Does my player need experience?

No. Players do need to be willing to work hard and listen well.

How big are the groups?

Programs are small groups of 6 to 8 players. Clinics are a little larger.

Why do you focus on the mid-range?

In our experience, the mid-range shot is one of the most overlooked parts of the game. Many young players shoot threes from far outside their range or drive into a crowd of defenders. A reliable mid-range jump shot gives a player another way to score. We still teach layups, for footwork, the right shooting hand, and finishing through contact. Players in our 12-14 age group will be introduced to the 3PT shot.

Who coaches?

Coach Rob leads every session. He has 17 years of coaching experience and is a USA Basketball Gold Licensed coach.

Can parents stay and watch?

Yes. Parents are welcome to stay.

What's different for older players?

The fundamentals are the same. Older players can take things like footwork to another level, and the pace may be different, but the work covers the same types of skills.

Is it open to girls and boys?

Yes. All players are welcome.

Should my player bring a ball?

Please leave it at home. We bring balls in the right size for each player and use ALIGN basketballs in our sessions. Players who still lean on their off-hand try the ONE shooting aid during form shooting, so they can feel what it does and get used to it on their arm. If you're interested, ALIGN and ONE are both available for purchase.

Do players get a t-shirt?

es, in our programs. Every player in a Fundamentals First program gets a Perfec'Shot t-shirt on the first day, and it's theirs to keep. Clinics don't include one.

What if my player misses a session?

We don't offer make-up sessions. We reserve space well ahead of time, and the program is priced for the full four weeks, so a missed session is missed. Coach Rob will talk your player through the new ideas in the next session, but your player will need to pick things up quickly. If we cancel or reschedule a session, we'll offer a make-up.

What about the waiver?

Every player needs a signed waiver before the first session. After you register, we email a link. It takes about two minutes on a phone.

Will you take photos or video?

We sometimes photograph or film sessions to teach and to show what we do. The waiver lets you opt out. We never post a child's full name with their picture without consent.

What do we get at the end?

For programs, the before and after videos of your player's shot, with your permission.

What if we need to cancel?

Cancel 7 or more days before a program starts for a full refund, or within 7 days of the start for a 50% refund. Once the program begins, there are no refunds. The full terms are in our Refund Policy.

How do I join a program?
